Pepe Caceres

Pepe Caceres, one of Colombia’s most famous recent bullfighters, died at age 53 from being gored in a bullring in 1987. Caceres was already semi-retired when he got a call to fill in for another bullfighter. Caceres did, and the bull gored him. The bullfighter who was brought in to kill that bull said he thought the bull had fought before, making it more dangerous – something prohibited by bullfighting tradition.

But at least Caceres got immortalized with this statue in Bogotá’s Santamaria bullfighting plaza.

Grabbing the bull by the horns on Caceres' statue.

This bullfighter could slip right into a ballet.

Bullfighting is a manly art, but bullfighters wear tights and these ballet-like slippers in order nimbly shift out of the bull’s path.

On the other hand, the sculptor gave both Pepe and the bull loads of masculinity.
