French Cinema Festival – Sept. 14 to Oct. 2 (Medellin Oct. 6 – 23)

September is Patrimony Month in Bogotá, with lots of events about local history, ecology, neighborhoods and culture.

Jazz al Parque: Sept. 9, 10, 11. Jazz music, mostly in the park.

Visiones de Mexico en Colombia: September and October show off Mexican culture in the Gabriel Garcia Marquez Cultural Center, on 11th Ave. in La Candelaria. (The cultural center was built by the Mexican government, because Marquez has lived many years in Mexico, but contains nothing about the Colombian novelist.)

 

Bogotá Summer Festival – Aug. 6-15 Bogotá’s summer festival includes kite flying, music, bullfighting and even movies.

Amateur Bullfighting Season – The first two weekends of August aspiring bullfighters show their skills in the Santamaria Bullfighting Stadium. Tickets are free and available in the stadium’s box office.

Urban Fashion Festival – Aug. 2 to 6, on the Eje Ambiental, in La Candelaria

FIFA Under-20 Football World Cup: Colombia’s biggest-ever sporting event starts July 29 until Aug. 20.

 

Cycling and Transit w/ David Byrne –  July 23, 5 p.m. Gabriel Garcia Marquez Cultural Ctr. – Talking Head Byrne, ex-Mayor (and current candidate) Enrique Peñalosa and others talk about bicycles and transit.

Fotografica – May 4 to June 15 – This annual photography event includes exhibitions in various sites around Bogotá, as well as a workshop. The invitee of honor is Mexico.

Bogotá International Book Fair – May 4 – 16. Held in Corferias, west of La Candelaria, the annual book fair receives a surprising amount of attention considering the lack of readers here. This year’s invitee of honor is Ecuador.

Car-Free Day – Feb. 3 is Bogotá’s annual car-free (but not taxi- or bus-free) day. A great day to ride a bicycle!

Festival Centro de Bogotá -  Jan. 19 – 23 Five days of mostly music, both folk and contemporary, in La Candelaria. Colombian and foreign groups, and lots of it is free!

Three Kings Festival in Egipto – Celebrating the kings who visited the newborn Jesus, this festival has lots of pagan pleasures.

Mestiza Music Festival – Dec. 11 – On the road to La Calera

Nocturnal Ciclovia – Dec. 8 – The city’s annual nocturnal Ciclovia is no Ciclovia. Not when the streets are are almost too crowded to move!

Noche de las Velitas/Night of the Candles – Dec. 7 – The traditional celebration of the Immaculate Conception and start of Bogotá’s Christmas celebration.

Bicycle Week (Semana de la Bicicleta) – Oct. 4 to Oct. 11 A week of events intended to bring attention to cycling and, hopeful, promote bicycling in Bogotá.

Juan Rolfo Photographer – Sept. 7 to Oct. 7 – An exhibition of Mexican writer Juan Rolfo’s photography. In the University of the Andes’ Julio Mario Santo Domingo building, which is on the Eje Ambiental. (Turn left just before Goce Pagano).

Alimentarte – Annual food festival, held in El Virrey Park, in northern Bogotá. July 17, 18 and 20 is International Food, with China as special invitee. Colombian food on July 24 and 25. Some 222 restaurants will show off their fare, and there’ll also be music and dance.

Colombia Bicentennial – There are numerous exhibitions, talks and conferences to be held commemorating the 200th anniversary of Colombia’s independence, including these, from July 6 thru 11.

International Poetry Festival of Medellin (with events in Bogotá, as well) – July 10, 13 and 14, in the Gimnasio Moderno.

Rock al Parque – July 3 – 5 . Said to be the biggest free music festival in Latin America. Celebrating its 15th anniversary.
