La Candelaria’s Rooftop Figures
Aliens? Visitors from a lost civilization? Victims of evil spells?
The sculptured human figures perched on La Candelaria roofs and balconies were created in the mid-1990s by with financing from City Hall. Each was modeled after a local resident, generally ordinary people such as shoeshine men, carpenters and one of the artist’s models. Originally, they numbered about two dozen, but many have been damaged by win, rain and sunlight. Olave is arranging financing for a new set of sculptures to be placed on the Plaza del Chorro.
